Added Mark Hammond to the nosy list, as the original author and implementor of PEP 311 (which added the GILState APIs). Mark, since your PEP deliberately punted on multiple interpreter support, feel free to take yourself off the list again. If you spot any glaring errors in my post above it would be nice to know, though :)
