Con decreto del presidente della Repubblica del 17 maggio 2001, pubblicato sulla Gazzetta Ufficiale nº 117 del 22 maggio 2001], si è creata l'insegna distintiva per gli ex presidenti della Repubblica Italiana; il quale così recita: «L'insegna distintiva degli ex presidenti della Repubblica è costituita da uno stendardo la cui foggia, quadrata, è conforme al modello allegato" ... "inquadrato: nel I e IV di verde, nel II e nel III di rosso, al grande rombo appuntato ai lembi di bianco, esso rombo caricato dalla cifra d’onore della presidenza della Repubblica di cui al d.p. 14 ottobre 1986, nº 19/N».
