Mieczysław Porębski (31 March 1921 – 10 September 2012) was an art historian, critic and theorist.[1]
Biography
[edit]In 1938 he started to study art history at the Jagiellonian University.[2] His studies were interrupted by the outbreak of the World War II.[2] During the Nazi occupation, he attended the School of Artistic Crafts[2] (Kunstgewerbeschule)[3] and collaborated with Tadeusz Kantor's underground theatre.[4] In 1944, he was arrested for underground activities.[4] He was imprisoned in the Gross-Rosen and Sachsenhausen concentration camps.[4]
From 1950 to 1969 he was a lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw.[1] From 1952 to 1957 he was editor-in-chief of the magazine Przegląd Artystyczny.[2] From 1970 he was a professor at the Jagiellonian University.[4] From 1974 he was a curator at the National Museum in Kraków.[1] In 1990 he was elected a member of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences.[1] Tadeusz Różewicz dedicated to him the poem Nożyk profesora (2001).[3]
