FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Hear first-hand from our incredible community of customers.

How long does it take to install Tideways?

Tideways can typically be installed in less than five minutes.

Once the extension is added to your PHP environment and API Key configured, Tideways automatically begins collecting performance data from your application. No code changes are required, and popular PHP frameworks and libraries are detected automatically.

Does Tideways impact application performance?

Yes, any kind of monitoring and performance tracking of software will impact performance a little. Tideways is using the most advanced techniques to hook into PHP applications, so that we see an overhead of just 1-5% for the majority of applications out there. In fact we have contributed to modern observability APIs to PHP itself, to reduce overhead such as the Zend Observer API and Error Notify API and other.

What sets Tideways apart from other Application Performance Monitoring (APM) tools?

As many other APM tools for PHP, Tideways covers the birds-eye perspective of your application with performance monitoring of the whole application, individual page types, backend cronjobs and workers and more, including errors. You can setup notifications for tracked metrics and get a weekly report on the overall performance of your application.

Where Tideways sets itself apart is the combination with its powerful profiling tools. Similar to other APM tools, Tideways collects and stores detailed performance snapshots of individual requests (we call them traces). But Tideways allows you to control exactly where to collect more of these traces, through tracepoints, and even trigger profiling data on specific requests manually as a developer through the Chrome Extension or CLI.

This gives a developer unique control to gather all the data they need for quickly finding and fixing performance issues.

In addition, Tideways focus is on PHP applications only, allowing us to customize data models and collection in a way that gives insights that other generic APM tools cannot provide: Insights on Autoloading, Garbage Collection, and many other quirks of the PHP language that affect performance. With Tideways you can be sure to find them.
