Welcome to Appleby Horse Fair 2009
This is the official site for the Appleby Horse Fair. The Fair is an annual gathering of Gypsies and Travellers in the town of Appleby in Cumbria’s Eden Valley.
The Fair runs from the first Thursday in June (unless this falls on 1 June, in which case the Fair starts on 8 June) to the following Wednesday.
The 2009 Fair takes place from Thursday June 4 to Wednesday June 10, although it is in reality an extended weekend event, with most people arriving on the Thursday and leaving by Monday morning.
The Fair is unique in Europe and, as well as attracting around 10,000 Gypsies and Travellers, over 30,000 other visitors attend the Fair, with Sunday being the traditional main visitors’ day. It transforms the town of Appleby for the week, as it normally has a population of around 2,500.
The information here, which has been prepared by the public sector
organisations which co-ordinate the Fair, is designed to make the Fair as
safe and enjoyable as possible for everyone. Please expect and respect
change in the way the Fair is co-ordinated.
