Marmaris that connects Rhodes and Egyptian trade roads to Anatolia was an important commercial centre in ancient times. Marmaris which had the first name of Physkos in ancient times, its first settlement is assumed to of settled in the area of Asar Hill in the north due to the immigration of the Caria tribe. Physkos means the country of CAR therefore; this settlement gets its name Caria. It is possible to see traces of Caria, Rhodes and the other island civilizations, Egypt, Assyrian, Persian, Macedonian, Ionia, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman civilizations.
It was known as Mimaras in the period of the Ottoman Empire and then it changed to Mermeris and it is finally known as Marmaris. The Aegean and Mediterranean coasts make this region consistently attractive.
Marmaris is an important settlement that many civilizations have ruled throughout time.
