How does immersive sound from Barco work?

As you can see in the soundfield diagram below, Auro 11.1 adds two additional layers of sound to the existing 5.1 surround sound layer. The Auro 11.1 format incorporates a unique height and overhead channel which allow for natural lifelike sound with sound waves coming from every direction, just like they do in real life. In this way, Auro 11.1 creates the most realistic and natural immersive audio experience.

Watch the educational video below for a short explanation of how the system works.

The Auro 11.1 format in a nutshell

  • Unique three-layer sound technology (surround, height and overhead)
  • Compatible with existing 5.1 installations
  • Minimal hardware investment required
  • The most economically viable immersive sound system
  • The perfect complement to your premium branded experience
  • Fully ready to support future immersive audio standard

“After independently testing both commercially available immersive cinema sound solutions, it became abundantly clear that Auro 11.1 provides the best complement to the Cinemark XD experience. We firmly believe that the fullness and richness of Auro’s height layer, coupled with the discreetness of the future and open standard object-based capabilities supported by Auro, will make for the best movie going experience possible. It’s backward and forward compatibility with existing cinema audio systems, in addition to the ease and economy regarding both implementation and operation, are also critical elements.”

Damian Wardle, Vice President of Worldwide Theatres Technology & Presentation, Cinemark

“It’s highly compatible with our existing audio configuration. The unique speaker ‘height’ layer produces the most natural sound, and literally immerses the audience with audio of unsurpassed quality, at any listening level. Plus Auro 11.1 also adheres to an ‘open-standard’ of content creation, which ultimately translates into fewer restrictions and more choices for both filmmakers and exhibitors.”

Rob Del Moro, Chief Purchasing Officer, Regal Entertainment Group
