Sharing iPlayer data

Post categories:

Jo Hamilton | 17:45 UK time, Friday, 27 November 2009

I'm pleased to be able to tell you that from today, the BBC is sharing iPlayer data in more detail than ever before. The numbers give new insights into how people use the service, who they are and which programmes are most popular. Data will be available for how many people watched via live simulcast versus on demand. And even how many people watch iPlayer on each platform - be it PC, mobile or games console.

What the data shows is as many men as women use iPlayer, with the typical iPlayer user younger than the typical TV viewer or radio listener. As you might expect, the vast majority of people access it via computer, but mobile and games console usage is growing.

We'll be publishing figures for TV and radio first but views of shorter clips will follow later and within the pack there's a technical note on how we collect the data.

Jo Hamilton is the Head Of Audience Measurement, BBC.

This is very cool, but I must confess that I was a little surprised to see “data”, “download” and “Powerpoint” in the same breath—it wouldn’t be most people’s first choice of format for sharing or exchanging stats, as it makes it very very difficult to get at the raw figures for further analysis.

nevali - we'll try and put it in a more convenient format on Monday. What would be your preference?

  • Comment number 3.

Hi Nick — As most of it’s tabular (and charts driven by tabular data), some kind of spreadsheet format would seem ideal (personally, OpenOffice would be my preferred format, but others would probably prefer Excel).

    Hey Nick,

You should post the slide show on slideshare and embeded the viewer here so anybody an view where ever.

    Thanks for posting

Would be very interested in seeing this. But I'm on an aged Mac with no Microsoft software on it. I could go upstairs and use my sparkily wonderful Mac... but it also has no Microsoft software on it. So I'll go without the information.

Might I suggest for the tabulated data plain Comma Separated Value format, thereby allowing almost anyone's choice of spreadsheet/analysis software to handle it?

  • Comment number 7.

@RedversBKyle: both Apple’s iWork and the free OpenOffice.org will handle both Excel and OpenOffice (and, of course, CSV, though the latter is a relatively flawed format for anything with any complexity)

    @RedversBKyle

Can't you just press space (Quicklook)?

  • Comment number 9.

Have I missed something or are you teasing us with those iPhone/iPod Touch images on the first page?

A dedicated app and live streaming?!

  • Comment number 10.

antshez is bang on the money here - that iPhone graphic on the front page of the presentation is *very* interesting. So when's the native app coming?

    Question:

Will be able to see the data for every programme, and will we be able to see it when we want, i.e. click on a link on an iPlayer page which says "See how many other people are watching this video" or something of that nature?

    Very good though.

Is the Virgin Media data missing simply because it is not collectable?

I should think I have only ever watched 6 or 7 programs on my PC, but use iPlayer on my TV via cable all the time.

I thought Virgin Media use was a very significant part of overall iPlayer use, circa 25% ??

Request for Excel format here please. Can view it on OpenOffice for those of us who don't want to fun M$

  • Comment number 14.

Another request for CSV and/or excel files, and why not show us how many people have watched each program etc - YouTube manages to do that and you certainly know all sorts of details statistics about iPlayer programs - most popular sections etc. Share them with us!

The iPhone app does look interesting: Live TV and radio, streaming and downloads. Great! Would stop me having to use get_iplayer to download things to watch on the train.

When we have the data in CSV format, can you please provide the programme codes (like b00p27fm for "EastEnders_27_11_2009") in the "top 30" data, so we can link to the /programmes/ data, and so the image can be used?

In an ideal world, it would be lovely to have some LIVE STATS please. The News pages have live stats - https://news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/bsp/hi/live_stats/html/map.stm - iPlayer should have them too.

You have live stats internally, let's see them please!

  • Comment number 17.

antshez and AllAboutiPhone - the images are old images and should not be taken to mean that anything is likely to happen soon. Since the images seem to have provoked unnecessary speculation we'll probably update the pack later today and remove them.

While we would like to provide the data in different formats this may not be possible today - I've got "staff shortages" due to illness.

  • Comment number 18.

    Jo, thank you for this.

  • Comment number 19.

Hi Nick — no expectations regarding data formats over here. Whatever can be done is very much appreciated.

In all honesty, the best I’d hoped for was a “noted, we’ll try to do it for the next batch of stats”, so doing it for these ones is a major bonus!

  • Comment number 20.

nevali - it may have to be for the next one (staff shortages)!

  • Comment number 21.

    @NickReynolds

Thanks for clarifying. There was always going to be rampant speculation if you include an image like that though, even if it was just an internal mockup!

  • Comment number 22.

Obviously, watching a programme on iPlayer (or similar) isn't likely to be as good quality as watching it directly on TV (or via a recording on a digi-box) so I'm not sure why some people are expecting it to be perfect quality.

This is a great step, looking foward, live stats would be awesome.
