The comment was alleged to have been aimed at Hibs forward Jair Tavares during the Scottish Premiership match
Dundee United and Hibernian agree that a comment picked up by TV footage in their Scottish Premiership game was likely "derogatory rather than racial".
A clip was highlighted on social media of Hibs' Jair Tavares allegedly being subjected to racist abuse at Tannadice.
An investigation involving both clubs and the broadcaster has found the shout was likely not racist in nature and came from the stand housing Hibs fans.
United welcomed the rectifying of their fans' "unfair representation".
A statement from the clubs said: "While there is no conclusive proof to confirm the words used by the offender, all parties are in agreement, based on the evidence available, that the likelihood is the comment was derogatory rather than racial.
"In no way does this make the abuse acceptable, but it is clear that the initial media clip proved an unreliable and skewed representation of the incident."
The incident occurred as Tavares retrieved the ball from the touchline on the opposite side of Tannadice to the away fans' section.
In light of the investigation, it is unclear who the subject of the comment was, but Hibs have released footage of several camera angles which give greater context to the incident.
Both clubs say they do not tolerate any form of derogatory abuse.
Hibs said they will "continue to investigate the matter "and that "if an individual is identified, then the person will face the strongest action from the club".
Livingston assistant manager Marvin Bartley, who is also the equality and diversity advisor to the Scottish FA, had implored football authorities to take swift action as he tweeted a video of the interaction.
United hope their "calm and concise investigation will end a disappointing experience for our supporters who should have been celebrating victory on the park".
