    Belgium 0-1 Egypt

    Umir Irfan
    Football tactics correspondent

Belgium's 4-4-2 out of possession was undone for Egypt's goal following a similar pattern we've seen in a few World Cup games now.

As the defending team shifts over towards the ball, the two central midfielders can't cover the width of midfield and it gives teams the chance to target the far-side number 10 with a diagonal pass.

We saw the same in the build-up to Morocco's goal against Brazil.

On both occasions the winger on the opposite side (Vinicius for Brazil and Trossard for Belgium) hadn't tracked back and the gap in midfield was punished.

Nice, neat play from Belgium and Jeremy Doku's cutback finds Leandro Trossard in the middle of the penalty box but the Arsenal man completely mis-kicks it.

Egypt are being very clever. When Jeremy Doku is on the ball they make sure if he gets past one he doesn't get past two or three.

Oh dear. Egypt win a corner and Emam Ashour passes it straight to the feet of Jeremy Doku, who gets on a run but is eventually thwarted and Ahmed Fatouh is shown a yellow card for the challenge.

Good strike and what a good save as well.

Thibaut Courtois only just got his fingertips to that.

Jeremy Doku hasn't been able to trouble anyone with his pace because Egypt have doubled up and even tripled up on him.

That is a goal of the highest, highest quality. Fair play, brilliant from Egypt! This World Cup has come to life in the last few games and we are all loving it!

Quality finish that and great play from Salah. Egypt look up for this and Belgium seemed stunned.

I think the Belgium manager Rudi Garcia will have had a little word with them there just to step it up a little bit.

I'd like to see a bit more from Youri Tielemans and Amadou Onana, getting on the ball and dictating play a bit. They haven't really been able to do that yet.

Egypt have looked absolutely brimming with energy.

Do the conditions perhaps suit them a little better?

Egypt fans certainly enjoyed celebrating that goal, with fans dressed as pharaohs to my right dancing away during that hydration break.

They have good reason to savour that moment to be fair. Only once before in their seven previous World Cup games have they taken the lead, but they went on to lose that game.

Long way to go, but can they get that historic first World Cup win here?

Woops. Belgium create a promising chance but Emam Ashour does his defensive duties and actually ends up drawing a foul.

The ball fell to Kevin de Bruyne and he got a decent shot away but it wouldn't have counted even if it went in.

Egypt look very lively, very aggressive and they're stretching this Belgium team who are struggling to keep hold of the ball.

They need their midfielders to calm the team down. They're struggling to make two or three passes.

Egypt have only ever led in the World Cup once before - and it only lasted for around 25 minutes before they ultimately went on to lose to Saudi Arabia in 2018.

What a goal. A great ball from Mo Salah and Emam Ashour steps in from the left wing. The defenders step back and Ashour takes a touch and strikes through it. He makes it look like it's going to Thibaut Courtois' left.

It's a lovely clean strike. Courtois is in the middle of the goal and he still can't get to it. That's how good it is.

There's clearly a fair few journalists from Egypt inside the press box here because that goal prompted plenty of celebrations.

Egypt have had to be patient, soak up the pressure but what a way to take the lead.

Dream start for Egypt, who are bidding for their first-ever win at a World Cup.

You're up against the best goalkeeper in the world and Eman Ashour has found the bottom corner beautifully - tiny little bit of bend on it but it's got the pace as well.

    Exquisite finish.
