Jack, several questions. Are you saying that when stdin is a pipe and not a tty, pdb works better with use_rawinput set False? Are you sure that the auto setting is correct in all use cases? Are you aware that you can set use_rawinput 'manually'? Have you read my previous response msg118093? Are you willing to help sort out the questions and issues therein?
