That's really helpful, Pavel!  Thanks for investigating so thoroughly.  I'm going to double check all the places I've made the assumption that "tstate" isn't NULL and likewise for "tstate->interp".

Is there an issue open for the bug in multiprocessing?  If not, would you mind opening one?
