repl: keep reference count for `process.on('newListener')` by addaleax · Pull Request #61895 · nodejs/node

When investigating a memory leak in one of our applications,
we discovered that this listener holds on to a `REPLServer`
instance and all heap objects transitively kept alive by it
by capturing as part of its closure.

It's cleaner to declare the listener outside of the `REPLServer`
class and to actually clean it up properly when it is no longer
required or meaningful, which is easily achieved through
keeping a reference count.

… hooks

The original workaround for nodejs/node#61895 searched
for the REPL's newListener hook by checking listener.toString() for
'ERR_INVALID_REPL_INPUT'. That string is not stable across Node.js patch
versions; on some Node.js 24 builds on ubuntu2004 the hook isn't found and
stays alive, keeping the REPL context reachable and preventing GC.

Snapshot the process newListener set before REPL creation and remove any
listeners added by the REPL using identity comparison instead.

Two fixes to make the GC regression test reliable across Node.js versions:

1. Use identity comparison (snapshot before vs after REPL creation) to
remove the newListener handler added by the Node.js REPL for
   nodejs/node#61895. The previous toString()
check for 'ERR_INVALID_REPL_INPUT' is not stable across Node.js patch
   versions — on Node.js 24.16.0 ubuntu2004 the function's source text
is not present in toString(), so the handler was never removed.

2. After the REPL emits 'exit' in mongosh-repl.close(), null out
repl.context so that async cleanup callbacks (e.g. the history file
write) that keep the REPLServer alive don't transitively prevent the
   vm.Context from being garbage collected.

…rkarounds

Per @addaleax's review:

- Windows: e2e_tests_windows_vsCurrent_small runs a pre-Windows-2022 OS
that cannot load current mongod (>= 8.3 exits 0xC0000139
STATUS_ENTRYPOINT_NOT_FOUND, a too-old system DLL). Instead of skipping
the suite, pin that variant to the newest server version that runs
there (8.2.x), the same pattern as the RHEL7 e2e tests only running the
7.0 server. This removes the whole variant-gated-skip approach:
integration-testing-hooks.ts is reverted to main (no skip/probe/retry/
isStarted), the EVERGREEN_BUILD_VARIANT plumbing is removed, and the
e2e-tls after-hook isStarted guards are reverted.

- GC: the manual process-listener removal in cli-repl-gc.spec.ts and the
`repl.context = null` in mongosh-repl.ts were masking the issue rather
than fixing it. nodejs/node#61895 (backported to v24.x, which our CI
runs) ensures REPL-created `process` listeners no longer keep the
instance alive after close, so neither workaround is needed -- removed
both and rely on the upstream fix.

…+ diagnose retainer

Heap retaining-path analysis (forward BFS from GC roots, weak edges excluded)
shows the tagged object is reachable only through the now-closed REPL's vm
context -- a cppgc/Oilpan-managed `ContextifyContext` from createContext() -- with
no JS-level retainer on Node 24.16.0: nodejs/node#61895 makes the repl
'newListener' handler a module-level function that captures nothing, and mongosh
removes its own SIGINT/exit listeners on close. A standalone repro collects the
object on 24.16.0 (linux + darwin), even under 400MB heap pressure and after 30
create/close cycles. So the object IS collectible; the test was flaky because a
single `v8.getHeapSnapshot()` GC does not reliably run the full cppgc sweep that
reclaims the context under the loaded heap of the full CI suite.

Force a full GC (grabbing `gc` at runtime so no --expose-gc launch flag is
needed) and retry until the object is gone. If it is ever NOT collected, print
the strong and purely-JS retaining paths so a genuine retainer is surfaced
rather than masked -- per review feedback to dig into the real issue instead of
scrubbing process listeners / nulling repl.context.

…e fix (nodejs/node#61895)

Root cause of the GC-test failure (found via heap retaining-path analysis +
reading the CI task logs): the leaked object is retained only through the
closed REPL's vm context, anchored by a process 'newListener' handler that
closes over the REPLServer and is never removed on close. nodejs/node#61895
fixes this (the handler becomes a module-level function that captures nothing)
and shipped in Node v24.16.0. mongosh CI's macOS (nvm) and Windows
(InstallNode.ps1) hosts run the pinned 24.16.0 and the test passes there with no
workaround -- but the Linux hosts use /opt/devtools/node24, which currently
provides v24.14.0 (setup-env.sh only checks the major version), so the Node bug
is present and the object cannot be collected.

main worked around this by scrubbing the leaked 'newListener' handler from the
test, which masks the real (Node) issue. Per review feedback, drop the
workaround and instead skip the test on Node versions that predate #61895,
clearly documenting that it is a Node bug. The test still runs and passes on the
pinned 24.16.0 (macOS/Windows now, Linux once the devtools image updates).

… the GC test version gate

Address review feedback on the GC test: the REPL-context leak only
reproduces on Node < 24.16.0 (pre nodejs/node#61895). CI's macOS (nvm) and
Windows (InstallNode.ps1) hosts already run the pinned 24.16.0, but the
Linux hosts used /opt/devtools/node24 (currently 24.14.0) because
setup-env.sh selected the toolchain node by major version only.

Download and prefer the exact pinned $NODE_JS_VERSION on Linux when the
devtools image lags (with a fallback so a transient download failure isn't
fatal), so all CI runs a Node.js with the fix. The GC test can then run
unconditionally instead of being version-gated/skipped.
